One day I am photographing a cosmetic surgeon, the next day I am up in helicopter photograph the majestic Bitterroot Mountains for a client. It was a beautiful day, the sky was blue, the mountains were snowcapped. I strapped myself in the helicopter, sat in the backseat. The pilot had taken the door off so I could get a great view and I did. I am not sure how long we were up in the air. I only knew by the time we landed I had taken about 260 images. I had shot with my Canon 40D and 24-105mm f4 lens. I set my camera to TV and made sure I was shooting at the minimum of 1/1200 to avoid vibration. I would change my ISO up to 400 if I did not have enough light. I would rather have a little noise than camera shake.
It was an awesome ride to hover above the Rockies. I was so absorbed in looking and shooting that only when I would hang out my leg or arm did I realize I was in helicopter. The wind and cold temperatures would shock my limbs and remind me to pull them back in. I also brought some heat packs and put them in my gloves to keep the batteries and my hands warm. It took me a couple of hours to get my land legs back but I was pumped for the rest of the day and really pleased with the images. That night was the lunar eclipse and after giving my kids a bath we ran out to the front yard to watch this magical event...they in their pajamas, around 38 degrees, and boots and robes and me with my camera on a tripod. Kate came home just in time to watch with us. It was a magical day in Montana.
